1. What a GPT translator does differently

A GPT translator reads the whole passage before it writes a single word of output. That is the difference, and it is not a small one. Older machine translation matched phrases against a table of previous translations, segment by segment, which is why it produced text that was grammatically clean and occasionally absurd.

You paste a paragraph or drop in a file. The model works out what the document is, who it is for, and which terms have to stay fixed, then translates against that understanding rather than against a lookup table. A contract stays a contract. A discharge summary keeps its clinical register. A spreadsheet comes back with its columns where you left them.

The GLOTX GPT translator opens 8 file formats, translates into 120+ languages, and accepts documents up to 50 MB and images up to 15 MB. Text translation is free and needs no account.

2. Everything you can open: 8 formats, 50 MB, 15 MB

The GPT translator takes eight kinds of file. Most tools tell you what they support; fewer tell you where they stop. Here is both.

Text — paste it into the box at the top of this page. No account, no character cap.

PDF — the layout gets rebuilt rather than flattened into a wall of running text. Columns stay columns.

Word — headings, numbered lists, footnotes and the numbering that depends on them.

Excel — cell contents translate. Formulas are left alone. Column and sheet structure holds.

PowerPoint — slide text and speaker notes, in place.

JSON — values translate, keys do not. Your app still boots.

Images — screenshots, photographs of printed pages, scanned forms.

Every format at once — mixed batches in a single pass.

Documents cap at 50 MB. Images cap at 15 MB. If your file is bigger than that, splitting it is the honest answer, and we would rather tell you here than fail after you have waited through an upload.

3. How GPT translation works, step by step

You give it something. Paste text or upload a file. Long inputs get split at natural boundaries: a section break, a paragraph, a table row. Nothing gets cut mid-sentence. The pieces are translated against shared context instead of in isolation, which is why page forty still uses the term page four established.

The GPT translator works out what it is looking at. Subject matter, register, recurring terminology, who the reader is. It draws that from the text itself rather than from a setting you have to configure. Once it has decided that "Purchaser" is a defined party and not a general noun, it stops re-deciding on every sentence.

You get it back in the shape you sent it. Plain text returns as text. Documents are rebuilt with headings, tables, slide structure and cell layout intact, ready to download and hand on.

4. See the difference: six worked examples

These are real translation problems, each shown three ways. The literal column is what phrase-matching produces. The GLOTX column is what happens when a GPT translator reads the sentence in context first.

Idiom — English to German

SourceWe should probably let sleeping dogs lie on the pricing question.
LiteralWir sollten wahrscheinlich schlafende Hunde auf die Preisfrage legen lassen.
GLOTXBeim Thema Preisgestaltung sollten wir das Thema besser nicht wieder aufgreifen.

What changed. The literal German says something close to "we should let sleeping dogs lie down on the pricing question." That is not an idiom in German. It is an image of dogs being placed on a topic, and a reader will stop and reread it. German has no proverb that carries "leave a settled matter alone," so there is no equivalent phrase to swap in. The substitution approach has nowhere to go. The GLOTX version drops the picture and translates the intention: better not to raise the subject again. The folksiness is lost, and that is the right trade. An idiom that lands as nonsense costs you more than plain phrasing ever will.

Formal register — English to Japanese

SourceLet me know if that works for you.
Literalそれがあなたに合うかどうか教えて。
GLOTXご都合がよろしいかどうか、お知らせいただけますでしょうか。

What changed. Politeness in Japanese lives in grammar, not vocabulary. The literal version uses 教えて, the plain imperative you would use with a friend, and あなた, a second-person pronoun that reads as blunt or oddly distant when aimed at a client. Both are defensible translations of the English words. Both damage the relationship. The GLOTX version uses the honorific お知らせいただけますでしょうか and drops the pronoun entirely, because Japanese business writing addresses its reader by implication rather than by name. English signals register through word choice. Japanese signals it through verb morphology, and anything that only swaps words will miss it every single time.

Ambiguous pronoun — English to French

SourceThe board reviewed the committee's proposal, but it had already been dissolved.
LiteralLe conseil a examiné la proposition du comité, mais il avait déjà été dissous.
GLOTXLe conseil a examiné la proposition du comité, mais ce dernier avait déjà été dissous.

What changed. English lets "it" stay vague. French does not. Both conseil and comité are masculine singular, so il can point at either, and a French reader will default to the more prominent noun, which here produces the reading that the board dissolved itself. The GLOTX version uses ce dernier, "the latter," pinning the reference to the committee. Notice what happened: the source sentence never resolved the ambiguity, and the translation had to, because the target language forces a choice the source language allowed you to duck. That is a judgement, not a substitution. A system matching phrases has no mechanism for making it.

Medical terminology — Spanish to English

SourceEl paciente presentó un cuadro de disnea de esfuerzo y se indicó control en un mes.
LiteralThe patient presented a picture of effort dyspnea and control was indicated in one month.
GLOTXThe patient presented with exertional dyspnoea, and follow-up was scheduled in one month.

What changed. Three false friends in a single sentence. Cuadro does mean picture, but in a clinical note it is the presentation, and English discharge summaries say "presented with." De esfuerzo is conventionally exertional, not "effort." And control in Spanish clinical writing means follow-up. The literal version tells an English-speaking clinician that something was being controlled, when what the record actually says is that the patient should come back in a month. Word by word, every literal choice is defensible. Read together, they change what the next clinician does.

Legal terminology — English to Spanish

SourceThe tenant shall not assign the lease without the landlord's consent, which shall not be unreasonably withheld.
LiteralEl inquilino no asignará el arriendo sin el consentimiento del propietario, que no será retenido irrazonablemente.
GLOTXEl arrendatario no cederá el contrato de arrendamiento sin el consentimiento del arrendador, el cual no podrá denegarse injustificadamente.

What changed. Inquilino and propietario are the words you use talking about a flat. Arrendatario and arrendador are the words a Spanish lease uses about its own parties, and an agreement that calls them anything else reads as a translation rather than as an instrument. Asignar is assignment in the arithmetic sense; transferring a lease is ceder. Retener means holding something physically, which misses the clause entirely. This is about refusing consent, so denegarse. The literal version is comprehensible Spanish. It is not enforceable-sounding Spanish, and opposing counsel will notice before your client does.

Number and measure words — English to Chinese (Simplified)

SourcePlease send the three signed contracts and a copy of the invoice by Friday.
Literal请在星期五前发送三签合同和发票的一复印件。
GLOTX请在星期五前把三份已签署的合同和一张发票复印件发送过来。

What changed. Chinese counts nouns with measure words matched to the noun's class, and the literal version omits both of them. 三签合同 and 一复印件 are not awkward Chinese. They are ungrammatical. The GLOTX version supplies 份 for documents and 张 for sheets, and adds 已 to 签署 to mark the contracts as already signed, which English carries invisibly inside the participle. None of this is stylistic preference. A phrase-matching system that has not seen this exact sentence before has no way to choose the right measure word, because the correct measure word depends on what the noun is rather than on what surrounded it last time.

5. Keeping one term consistent across fifty pages

Single sentences are the easy case. The hard case is a fifty-page supply agreement where "Purchaser" is a defined party in clause 1.1 and has to still be "Purchaser" in schedule 4, forty pages later, including the three places it appears inside a table.

Paste that document into a chat window in chunks and you will get "Purchaser" in the first ten pages, "Buyer" somewhere around page twenty when the context window rolls over, and "Acquirer" in the schedules. Each chunk is translated well. The document is unusable, because a defined term that changes name stops being a defined term.

A GPT translator that resets at every chunk boundary loses the thread. GLOTX carries terminology decisions across the whole file instead. When the model settles on a rendering for a defined party, a product name, a dosage unit or a column header, that choice holds to the end of the document. The same applies across a batch. Translate six files in one pass and they agree with each other.

This is the failure most people discover after they have already sent the translation to someone.

6. Who uses the GPT translator

Legal teams with a hundred-page supply agreement that arrived in the wrong language on a Friday. What matters is not elegance. It is that the defined terms hold from the definitions clause through to the final schedule.

Clinics and hospitals receiving discharge notes thick with abbreviations and regional drug names. Reading control en un mes as "control" rather than "follow-up" is a scheduling error with a patient attached to it.

E-commerce teams pushing forty thousand listings into six markets. If the size attribute renders three different ways, faceted search breaks and nobody can filter by it.

Universities and schools distributing the same problem set in four languages, where question numbering and mathematical notation have to survive intact or the instructions stop matching the problems.

Support teams taking tickets in twenty languages, written fast and full of product shorthand. "It keeps dying on me" is a hardware fault, not a bereavement, and the routing depends on knowing that.

Media and subtitling teams needing a first pass in eight languages. Character names, running jokes and who-calls-whom-what have to stay consistent, so the human subtitler is correcting a draft instead of starting again.

7. How GLOTX compares

Most GPT translator comparison tables are built from marketing pages. This one is built from published documentation, and every figure links to the source. Where a company does not publish a limit, we have left the row out rather than guess at it.

GLOTXChatGPTDeepL (Free)

Four rows is a short table, and it is short on purpose. Language counts, accuracy scores and star ratings are the numbers this category likes to publish and the numbers nobody can check. File limits you can check in an afternoon.

8. What is a GPT translator, and how is it different from machine translation?

A GPT translator runs on a large language model — the same class of system behind a chat assistant, pointed at one job. The name comes from the transformer architecture underneath it, which processes a passage as a whole and weighs how each word relates to every other word in it.

The systems that came before worked differently, and the difference explains most of what you have experienced. Statistical machine translation matched your text against enormous archives of previously translated documents and picked the most probable rendering. Neural machine translation improved the fluency of the output substantially, but still worked in short segments, translating a sentence with only limited sight of what came before it.

That segment boundary is where the errors live. A pronoun whose antecedent sat two sentences back. A term defined on page one and used on page thirty. An idiom that is only an idiom because of the sentence in front of it. All six examples above are versions of the same problem.

A GPT translator does not solve translation. It moves the failure point. It will still get low-resource languages wrong, and it will do so fluently, which is worse than getting them obviously wrong. Section 12 is about where the line is.

9. Free, Pro and Business: what the GPT translator costs

Free — $0. Text translation with no account and no character limit, plus 5 documents a month. Enough to find out whether the output is good enough for your work before you pay for anything.

Pro — $12 per month, or $9 per month billed annually. Unlimited documents, all 120+ languages, image translation.

Business — $39 per month. Everything in Pro, plus team workspace and API access.

No credit card is needed to start on Free.

10. What we can and cannot tell you about accuracy

We do not publish an accuracy percentage. Not because the number would be unflattering, but because we have not run an evaluation we would be willing to defend, and a figure without a published method behind it is decoration.

Here is what that means in practice. Every GPT translator in this category quotes a number. Almost none of them say which language pairs it covers, which document types, which metric, how many samples, or who scored it. A 99% that turns out to mean sentence-level BLEU on news text tells you nothing about a Spanish discharge summary or a German lease.

What we can tell you is specific and checkable. The six examples above are real outputs, shown next to what literal translation produces, in six languages and six domains. Run the same sentences yourself in the free text box. If the output does not match what is on this page, we would rather hear about it than have you take our word for it.

We are building a published evaluation with a documented method and a fixed document set. When it exists, the results will appear here, including the cases where we come off worse.

11. Your documents, our servers: what actually happens

You are about to upload a contract to a company you found through a search result. Here is a straight answer about what happens to it.

Your files and translations are handled under our privacy policy and our terms, which set out how we process what you send us. Read both before you upload anything confidential. They are short, and they are the documents that actually bind us.

Here is what we have not published yet: a named list of our sub-processors, a stated retention window with a number attached, and a signed data processing agreement available on request. If your procurement process needs any of those, ask us and we will tell you exactly where we are. Some vendors put a shield icon and the words "enterprise-grade security" over this section. That is not an answer, and it fails the moment somebody in legal asks a follow-up question.

For work that cannot leave your organisation under any circumstances, no cloud translation tool is the right answer, ours included.

12. When you still need a human translator

Certified and sworn translation. A court, a registry office or an immigration authority will require a translator with recognised credentials and a signed attestation. That is a legal category rather than a quality bar. No GPT translator output satisfies it, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling you a document that will be rejected.

Marketing transcreation. A campaign has to land, not merely mean the same thing. That work usually means writing fresh copy against the original brief, in the target culture, by someone who lives in it. Translation is the wrong tool and a good translator will tell you so.

Poetry and literary prose. Sound, metre, and ambiguity that the author put there deliberately. Translating these means choosing what to lose, and defending the choice. A person makes that call.

Low-resource languages. Where there is little training text, quality falls off sharply — and it stays fluent while it falls, which is the dangerous part. Confidently wrong output is harder to catch than obviously wrong output. If you are working into a language with a small digital footprint, have a speaker read it.

13. Languages and popular pairs

The GPT translator covers 120+ languages, including every pair between English, Spanish, German, French, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Polish, Swedish, Turkish, Russian, Arabic, Hindi, Thai, Indonesian, Vietnamese, Japanese, Korean and both written forms of Chinese.

Some pairs are harder than others, and the reason is usually structural rather than a matter of effort. English to Japanese has to reconstruct a politeness level the English never marked. English to Chinese has to supply measure words and aspect that English carries invisibly. Any language pair with little training text behind it will be weaker, whichever tool you use.

Working into a language you cannot read yourself? Have a speaker check it before it goes anywhere that matters.

14. Frequently asked questions

Is the GPT translator free to use?+

Text translation is free with no account and no character limit. The Free plan also includes 5 documents a month. Pro is $12 a month, or $9 a month billed annually, and removes the document limit. Business is $39 a month and adds a team workspace and API access. No card is needed to start.

Can ChatGPT translate documents, and why use this instead?+

ChatGPT can read a file and translate what is in it, but you get text back rather than your document. Layout, tables and slide structure have to be rebuilt by hand. GLOTX returns the same file type you uploaded with its structure intact, and holds terminology steady across the whole document.

Can it translate a PDF?+

Yes, up to 50 MB. The layout is rebuilt rather than flattened, so columns stay as columns and tables stay as tables. Scanned PDFs are read as images, and the quality of the result depends on how legible the scan is. See PDF translation.

Will my Word document keep its formatting?+

Yes. Headings, numbered lists, footnotes and their numbering survive the round trip. Formatting breaks when a document is pasted into a chat window as plain text and reassembled by hand, which is the usual reason people arrive at this page. See Word translation.

How accurate is it?+

We do not publish an accuracy percentage, because we have not run an evaluation with a method we would defend in public. The six worked examples above are real output you can reproduce in the free box. A published evaluation with a fixed document set is in progress, and it will include the results where we do worse.

Can it translate an Excel spreadsheet?+

Yes. Cell contents translate, formulas are left alone, and column and sheet structure holds. This matters for product catalogues and pricing sheets, where a shifted column causes more damage than an untranslated one. Header rows stay where they are, so anything downstream that reads the file by column keeps working. See Excel translation.

How many languages are supported?+

The GPT translator covers 120+ languages, covering all pairs between the major European, Middle Eastern and Asian languages. Pairs with less training text behind them produce weaker output, and that is true of every tool in this category rather than a quirk of ours.

Is my data used to train models?+

Our privacy policy and terms set out how we handle what you upload, and they are the documents that bind us. We have not yet published a sub-processor list, a stated retention period, or a signed DPA. If your procurement process requires those, ask and we will tell you where we are.

What are the file size limits?+

Documents up to 50 MB, images up to 15 MB, across 8 formats. Anything larger has to be split before upload. We publish these numbers because discovering them after a failed upload wastes your afternoon, and because most tools in this category publish no limit at all until you hit one.

How does it handle a fifty-page contract with defined terms?+

Terminology decisions carry across the whole file rather than resetting at each chunk. A party defined as "Purchaser" in clause 1.1 is still "Purchaser" in schedule 4. Translate a batch of files in one pass and they stay consistent with each other too.

Is it better than DeepL or Google Translate?+

A GPT translator reads the whole passage before writing, and for a single sentence that advantage is small and shrinking. For a long document with defined terms, a specific register, or an idiom that depends on the sentence before it, reading the whole passage first is what changes the output. The six examples above show the specific cases where it matters.

Do I need an account?+

Not for text. Paste it in and translate, with no email and no card. Documents need a free account, because your files and translation history have to be stored against something. The Free plan covers 5 documents a month at no cost, so you can test the output on a real file before you decide anything.

Can it translate images and screenshots?+

Yes, up to 15 MB. Screenshots, photographs of printed pages, and scanned forms all work. Text is read from the image and translated in place rather than handed back as a separate block. Legibility drives the result, so a sharp photograph in even light beats a dim one shot at an angle. See image translation.

What file types can I upload?+

The GPT translator opens eight: plain text, PDF, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, JSON, images, and mixed batches of the above. Each format has its own page covering what survives the round trip and what to watch for. Start at document translation if you are not sure which one applies to your file.
